This week we introduced some brand new centers in our classroom. We added an area that includes blocks which allow us to build ramps and bridges. We can use our imaginations and our little hands to create ramps to go up and across and down. Then we test our ramps with things like cars or balls. This challenges our spacial reasoning skills as we learn what pieces go together to make the bridges, what will make the bridges stay up, and what ways to build the bridge in order for the ball or car to be able to roll. We also added a new restaurant area. It includes different types of menus show pictures as well as words. We are able to use these menus to place orders and write them down. We have also been really excited to use the menus in our writing center. We look at the menus and to copy some of the words and pictures. We have even created some of our own menus. These new additions have really helped to make our classroom a more exciting environment and has inspired our budding writing skills.
Early in the week we began working on our letter H for our alphabet book. We decorated them with hearts, horses, and hands. This week because Mrs. Tallent was out, we got to experience a new teacher in our classroom named Mrs. Mason. We enjoyed having her, and we hope to see her subbing in our school more often. In preparation for Seuss week, we began learning about rhymes and rhyming words. We sang some nursery rhymes and talked about how words that rhyme end in the same sound. We even went around the room and named some rhyming words. We can't wait to use this knowledge for Dr. Seuss week next week! We also spent an afternoon trying a new food (hummus). Then we took a vote on who liked it, who did not like it, and who did not even want to try it. Thirteen out of our eighteen friends liked the hummus, so it may be a new food to try at home. It was fun to see what all of our friends thought about the hummus when they looked at it, what they thought when they smelled it, and what they thought after tasting it. Ms. Julie shared a sign language lesson that went right along with these concepts this week. We talked about our five senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling. She showed us the signs for these senses and some words to describe things we can see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. She even let us do some smelling and some taste testing. What a fun experience! On Thursday, we had music with Ms. Carol. We went over some of our favorite songs and activities. We got to dance to a song that is quickly becoming one of our favorites (The Tudie Ta Song), and we got to play our instruments to a steady beat. We are so excited to see what is in store next week. Monday is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and we will be celebrating Read Across America all week. We will be having many cool activities and lots of fun! Please feel free to join us and read with our class! Update from Señora Zoe: La Familia (Family)-- We learned the words for different family members, concentrating on la mamá (mom), el papá (dad), el hermano (brother), and la hermana (sister). I showed the children pictures of my own family and we looked at drawings representing different family members. We also learned a new song, Una Sardina (known as "Slippery Fish" or "Octopus" in English). We got to learn the names for different sea creatures and see each bigger one eat a smaller one on the felt board. New Words: mamá, papá, hermano, hermana, sardina (sardine), pulpito (octopus), atún (tuna), tiburón (shark) and ballena (whale) You can see our photos here.

It's been a cold week in preschool!! We have enjoyed spending time in the classroom working on writing, puzzles, blocks, and playing in the mail center. We finished up the letter G.
We tried two new foods this week - roasted beets and spaghetti squash - both from the Port Royal Farmers Market. This week we welcomed a new student in our class - Killian. Everyone in the class was sure to tell him the rules of what we do and don't at school. We also had a visit from a local dentist office (Coastal Pediatric Dentistry); they shared with us how to take care of our teeth. They also shared about what happens to our teeth when we don't take care of them. We learned all about how sugar bugs can live on our teeth if we eat too many sweets or don't brush our teeth every day. We celebrated three birthdays this week - Mrs. Trice, Ms. Condon, & Grayson Fawcett. And one of our friends, Carter, got to meet his new baby brother who was born this week. His name is Gibson, and Carter is a very proud big brother. For specials we had music and we learned all new songs, "ABC Hello", Itsy Bitsy Mousy Kins", and played instruments to "Ram Ram, Sam Sam". After we sang the goodbye song we also got to have a sticker and give Charlie the dog a hug. Our photos are here. Have a good weekend! - Mrs. Tallent and Mrs. Trice We will be saying goodbye to Ms. Condon next week. It goes without saying that Mrs. Tallent and Mrs. Trice are a wonderful team to finish the school year. Here's a note from her - I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you so much for letting me teach your children. I will miss seeing and teaching them but after much consideration I have decided that I needed a change in careers for the time being. I wish everyone the best and thank you again. I will be coming by LBS next week to say my goodbyes! Please feel free to stay in touch, my email is Whitney.C.Condon@gmail.com or by phone 781-308-8127. Ms. Condon This week in our class it was very busy as we prepared for Valentines Day. We made our Valentines for our grandfriends and parents and we decorated the bags for the Valentines we would receive from our friends on Friday. The Valentines that we made for each child's parents were sent in the mail. The entire class took a walk down to the post office and each child got to take a turn putting their valentine with their handmade envelope in the mailbox. We also got to go through the swamp and see all the animals. On Friday we went to the Helena House to visit our grandfriends and give them the valentines we made them as well as sing them our valentine songs.
In studio, the children got to finish printing their pictures. It is a part of a project that will take several weeks to complete. In music, we practicing keeping a steady beat with the drums. We also used egg shakers and tambourines. We also danced around to some of our newer songs. Everyone was so excited that we got to do the penguin song since it had been awhile too! There is no Spanish update this week since we were at the Helena House on Friday so we didn't have Spanish. Ms. Condon, Mrs. Tallent and Mrs. Trice Our photos are here. In our class, we have been very busy. We are continuing to do our alphabet book with the goal of having the students recognize each letter along with some other words. This week we did the letters F and G. To make our F's, we used feathers and learned that the word "feathers" starts with the "f" sound. We made our Gs like giraffes and talked about the "g" sound that starts the word giraffe. Some of the children even came up with other words that started with each of the letters. Next week we are continuing with more letters with some really fun activities and we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day as well.
In specials this week we had yoga, studio, sign language, music and Spanish. In yoga, we practiced our poses and we even learned some new ones too. In studio, Mrs. Neese had each child paint a picture with a different color of their choice. It's the first step in a project that will take a couple of weeks. During sign language, Ms. Julie taught us some signs for Valentine’s Day! We learned "I love you", card, teddy bear among others. Ms. Carol taught us three new songs in music. They were “Start the Day with a Song”, “Hip Hop Alphabet Rock” and “Love Somebody”. Each child also got to play an instrument along with the song. Froggy Se Viste (Froggy Gets Dressed)--Today in Spanish we read the book Froggy Se Viste (Froggy Gets Dressed) by Jonathan London. This is a book that has a good deal of words they already know, as well as repetitive language, so it is perfect for them right now! The children enjoyed guessing what Froggy forgot to put on when he went outside to play in the snow, and getting the chance to dress our paper cut-out "Froggy." They also liked the noise Froggy made when he stomped back and forth in the snow: chof, chof, chof! We also learned a new song for Valentine's Day coming up, Te Quiero or "I love you." They learned this song so quickly! These are the words to the song in case they want to teach it to you: Te quiero mamá te quiero papá, Te quiero mi bebito, Uno dos tres te quiero, Uno dos tres te quiero a tí. Review Words: la camisa (shirt), los pantalones (pants), los zapatos (shoes), la chaqueta (jacket), la gorra (winter hat) New Words: te quiero (I love you), las botas (boots), los guantes (gloves), la bufanda (scarf), las medias (socks) You can find our photos here. |
