This week in the Inquirers we started off with a walk through the wetlands. Our plan was to take some time to sketch and share our "self portraits" with one another in the amphitheater. As we walked they brainstormed a list of what they would like to include in their pictures, such as their smile, ears, hands, ect. Though our time was cut short due to the weather, each child drew a beautiful expression of them-self before the rain clouds moved in! We also went on a walk Friday to the small picnic entrance of the sands to eat snack. They were very amused with the boats they could see, the small crabs in the sand, and the seashells we found.
In centers Mrs. Ines created silly putty with the children and Mrs.Trice brought in some goo/sand. If you would like to make some silly putty at home add 1 part elmers glue to one part starch (and paint for color), or for the goo/sand add flour to baby oil until it reaches the desired consistency. We continued to work on our alphabet book decorating our R with red things and s with straw. We played "I spy" and had specials. In Studio we continued our mixed media projects with Mrs.Neese using oil pastels. In music Mrs. Fripp encouraged us to use our singing voices more through our classes two favorite songs (Tooty Ta and The Lion Sleeps Tonight). We also worked on keeping a steady beat with instruments and taking turns in the Get On Board Song. In sign we talked about fruits and vegetables, and even read a book while practicing our new words. In Spanish we sang songs about "Fish Food" and three cold and hungry baby chicks whose mama saves the day. We also practiced, "Donde estas...? Aquí!" (Where is/are...) with a little dog spot who was hiding under a blanket and read a book about spot hiding from his mother. See you next week! Our photos can be found (here). We have a lot of videos and quite a few "posed portraits" because everyone was very interested in the camera this week! Mrs. Trice and Mrs. Ines In Spanish this week we continued practicing the question ¿Dónde está? We played peek-a-boo with our doggie friend, and then we read the book ¿Dónde Está Spot? (Where's Spot?) We also learned a new verse to the song Los Pollitos. Did you know that in Spanish, chicks say "pío, pío" rather than "peep peep?" : )new words: el maís (corn), el trigo (wheat) review: ¿Dónde está? ¡AQUí!! (Where is it? HERE!) Our photos are here.

This week in the Inquirers we went on a walk to Port Royal Elementary School playground where we played on the smaller structures and the swings. It was amazing see the children teaching each other how to swing ("See me? Pump your legs!") and also how to climb up and down the various jungle gyms. We also went on a walk later in the week with the "big kids". Our Pre-k teacher Mrs. Fastenau paired each of your children with a child from the older class. We sang a couple songs in the amphitheater before coming back, and even stopped to pick honey suckles! There were a lot of conversations on our walk ranging from what they thought we would see to what was going to happen in a few months when the pre-k class graduated. A lot of our kids said they were going to miss them but they were very excited to become "the big kids"!
We also introduced a new game called Crocodile Crocodile where the children say, "Crocodile Crocodile, down by the lake. I'm going to reach in and see what you ate!" Without peaking they took turns getting cards out of the crocodiles mouth which were labeled with either a letter or "SNAP!" If you got a letter you had to show your friends and tell them which one it was. At the end we took turns feeding the letters back to the crocodile. We also played with moon sand this week. We had Yoga with Mrs. Brittany and music with Mrs. Fripp. We went over our yoga poses and practiced singing our "Wee-Muh-Way"(s) for the Lion King song. Some other tunes you may have heard at home from your children are the "Tooty Ta" and the "Get on Board" song which have dances that go along with them. We also had Studio with Mrs. Inez where we finger painted and then she labeled what we said we created. Many made caterpillars, flowers, and a lot of other spring elements! For portfolios, we began doing Interviews with various questions such as what they want to be when they grow up, favorite snack, favorite place to go, and what they like to do on the weekend. Our answers ranged from pirate to doctor and it was a lot of fun to hear how some children interpreted and answered questions differently than they did the last time they were "interviewed". See you next week! Our photos are here. Mrs. Trice and Mrs. Inez This week in the Inquirers we introduced a lot of new centers and games, and reinforced important concepts such as colors, letters and their sounds, rhyming words, numbers, and classroom rules. We began the week with a walk, rope free! We stopped in the outdoor amphitheater and ate our strawberries for snack before returning to the school.
During circle time we learned a game called "Little Mouse" where we take turns trying to find which color house the mouse is hiding under. We also had an alphabet hunt during circle where partners were asked to find a letter on our alphabet wall and then circle it on the board. We let the children count our friends when we lined up, and when we took our lunch count. We also read many fun books our friends brought from home such as It Looked Like Spilt Milk, Cars, and Alphabet Animals. At our project table this week we continued working on our alphabet books. We talked about the letters M, Q, and Y which lead into a discussion of mirrors where we copied one another and another discussion on princes, princesses, King and Queens. We painted a "mirror image" by decorating half of our paper and transferring it to the other half, glued yarn in different designs for Y (outside!), and decorated crowns for our "Q"ueens. We had a lot of outdoor play this week but we did take breaks from the heat for centers, and music with Mrs.Fripp where we learned a new "Cowboy Dance". We appeared to show less interest in the train set and our Lego ramp over the last week so we replaced it with a dinosaur track/ramp, where our teamwork shined. We also introduced some matching card games, and an "office center" where we have witnessed several phone conversations and "business" acted out amongst friends. In our new magnet center many great questions have been asked. We look forward to answering them, and seeing where their curiosity leads us next! ¿Dónde está el perrito? (Where's the doggie?) In Spanish this week we learned how to answer the question ¿Dónde está? (Where is it?) with ¡Aquí está!!! (here it is!!!). We played hide and seek with a stuffed animal perrito (doggie) hidden under a blanket and under a cup. We also began learning a new song for springtime, "Los Pollitos," or "the Baby Chicks." This is a sweet song about how a mother hen takes care of her babies. At home: If you are comfortable, you can practice hiding a toy with your child and asking ¿Dónde está? and then helping your child shout out ¡Aquí !!! or ¡Aquí está!!! when they find it. Our photos from last week are here and the ones from this week are here. Mrs. Trice and Mrs. Ines |
