UPDATE- look for something in the mail next week! We will be going to the Helena House and the post office on Tuesday, and we will be sending a little note to you then.
We are so happy to welcome Ms. Sarah Weldon to our class! Ms. Weldon will be with us most days of the week from 9-6, so she’ll be able to communicate with you especially during pickup about what we’re up to and how we’ve been each day! Please introduce yourself to her when you see her. We’ve been enjoying her presence already. We’ve had a good week talking about the words thankful, gratitude, and grateful. Being thankful means not only loving what/who you have, but also realizing that not everyone has those things/people. During a discussion one day we talked about that something simple and obvious to us (pajamas) are things that not all kids are lucky enough to have. With the holidays approaching we decided to give to children like us who might not have pajamas. Scholastic (the company we order books from) is partnering with the Pajama Project to collect pajamas to distribute to kids not as fortunate as ours. We are going to spearhead a school pajama drive in order to help other children be warm and clean this winter. Stay tuned for more information about that. It was heartwarming to see how eager our kids were to help. We had made a Thanksgiving project to go home with you next week, and we hope you enjoy it! Ms. Sarah taught us some fall and Thanksgiving signs such as leaf, Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie, corn, tree, and more. She’s been helping us string together signs to make complete sentences! Ask us to show you “jumping in a leaf pile” and “frogs eat flies.” It’s so fun to see how far our sign skills have come in the last few months. This week in Spanish we learned about Las Cuatro Estaciones, or the four seasons. We learned a short poem to recite and act out which will help the children remember the seasons: En el invierno hace frio, en primavera crecen las flores. En el verano hace calor, y en el otoño caen las hojas (In winter it is cold, in the springtime flowers grow. In summer it is hot, and in autumn the leaves fall.) Next week we will review some politeness words for Thanksgiving! In Sign Language, Ms. Sarah showed us the signs for red, yellow, orange and brown. We learned the signs for leaf, acorn and squirrel, the sign for squirrel makes us laugh! We also learned some signs for Thanksgiving. Ms. Sarah read us a story about Hello Kitty and autumn. On Thursday we had Music with Ms. Carol. We danced and sang and we used the shakers! Ms. Carol read us a book about feelings. We also danced and sang to a different version of Itsey Bitsey Spider. It was lots of fun. Our school-wide Thanksgiving trip to the Helena House will be Tuesday morning, and we have some fun turkey songs to perform for our grandfriends. Please join us if you can! We will be closed Wednesday November 25-Friday November 27. Have a great weekend! Our photos are here.

Having a day off in the middle of the week threw us off a bit, but we got a lot of post office work done! If they aren't already, please help your child check the mail and talk about what you see. We have some catalogues in our book center that will be transferred to our art center next week with some glue and scissors.
We made beautiful postcards this week and practiced our handwriting while doing so. We received our own mail from Mrs. Groves, our former 2s teacher, and it was so exciting! We are writing her back and will learn more about the mailing process. We've been sorting our own "mail" with a box for letters and a box for numbers, an important recognition skill. We had fun at the Helena House today with our grandfriends. We used fine motor skills to tear and arrange tissue paper onto a laminating sheet. These will be turned into beautiful stained glass handprints once we get the laminator fixed (Mrs. F jammed it up!), and you'll get to take one home. You also will hopefully be receiving some special mail later next week, too! We are closed Weds, Thurs, and Friday of Thanksgiving week. Have a great weekend! This week in Spanish we learned about los meses del año.....the months of the year! In the 4 year old class we did juego del cumpleaños where we chanted the months forward and backward, standing and then sitting again when our birthday month was called. In the 2 and 3 year old class we matched picture symbols to the correct Spanish month card. In the 1 year old class we read a picture book about the months. We will now add En qué mes estamos? (What month are we in?) to our calendar activities in Spanish. new words: enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre, los meses del año Our photos are here. We've had a fun, helpful week in our classroom community! We started off by exploring x-rays and learned about the bones in our hands. Using an app on a Kindle, we saw real x-Ray images that looked just like our hands! Then we took this concept to the Studio and recreated the images using glue and q-tips. It prompted a great discussion about our bodies and what we would look like without bones supporting us. We talked about how doctors look at these images to help us feel better, and everyone had a doctor story to contribute!
Our newest center is a doctor's office with some real (and safe) medical equipment, and we've been taking great care of each other. Since we have doctors in our neighborhood (vets, dentists, too), we are going to expand our study to local community helpers. Today after exploring a police car, we walked through our neighborhood to the Port Royal police station and got a tour! Next week we will be doing some research about the post office and mail workers. We might even receive special mail from some old friends! In Handwriting Without Tears we are all getting comfortable with big and little lines, and we are learning the developmentally appropriate way to write letters (such as L, F, and E). You are always welcome to check out our workbooks. Hola! This week in Spanish we took off on our Days of the Week choo choo train! We make a "train" with the days of the week word cards, and then chant each day of the week, blowing our train whistles at the end. Los días de la semana son: lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, y domingo. As always, it was lots of fun to see how excited they get learning a second language. We are CLOSED next Wednesday November 11. Have a great weekend! Our photos are here. |
