We sure are settling into the new routines and procedures that come with having new teacher. We have continued to talk about rules, and how we behave in school. We always talk about why the rules are important (to keep us safe, to keep our friends safe, and to help us all learn and have fun).
At the beginning of the week we made our Potato Head sign for our class room that reminds us of all the important parts that we need for school. Everyday we need to have our looking eyes for looking at the speaker, our helping and gentle hands, our quiet mouths that use kind words, our listening ears, and our walking feet. The kids are really responding to Potato Head and his rules! After reading a book about silly monsters at school, we created our own goggly eyed monsters. During the project, we practiced following directions and waiting for our friends to finish. Each child was able to tell their monster what they needed to do at school. This project took two days for each friend to have a turn. That was an exercise in patience for some of us. Check out our class monsters in the classroom next week! We had several kid sized butterflies on the playground this week. We had a couple of discussions of butterflies and their habits. Look for more about butterflies soon. It seems to be a popular topic these days. In Studio we continued working on our projects with Mrs. Neese. The kids are very excited to see the finished product, but are enjoying the process as well. Señora Zoe is teaching us so many new Spanish words! We are using our listening ears as we try to understand all these new words. Señora Zoe read us another book in Spanish. This time it was on emotions. We practiced with the words first before she read the story. The kids were all so engaged. In the classroom, we have swapped out books and toys to keep things interesting and help us with a variety of skills. We used play dough for several days to help us with creativity, and building the muscles in our hands. We have a new Doctor center that has been very popular. The children are practicing taking care of others while figuring out how to use all those tools. Our friends were so excited to see the shirts and jerseys that their friends chose to wear on College Colors Day. Some of them noticed that they had the same colors and some were different. Here is a heads up for next week and beyond. Our specials schedule has changed. We start specials at 9 am now. This change will help us eliminate some of the time we spend in transition and give us more time for learning and having fun. Next week will be one day shorter with the holiday on Monday, but we still have a lot of fun things planned! Our photos can be seen here.

The Inquirers started the week off by having Yoga with Ms. Brittney on Monday! We always love doing our favorite poses, like the butterfly, the clam, and the downward dog. We also got to learn a few new poses that were a little more difficult to do, like the lizard pose and the dragons! We always finish our Yoga class by singing “The Long Time Sun”, doing our “laundry” and giving a big Om, and saying Namaste.
Tuesday we began to read a book about a boy named David who has some trouble following directions at school,David Goes to School by David Shannon. We have enjoyed reading this book a few times during this week. We realized that David has some trouble with some of the same things we do, so we talked about these things and talked about how David could go about doing some of these things a different way. By doing this it has helped us in our classroom and on the playground. On Wednesday we continued to talk about David and some things we could do to make our day run more smoothly. This gave us the opportunity to welcome Mr. Potato Head to our class. We started out by discussing some of the different parts Potato needed to be ready for school. So starting put with a blank Potato Head, and decided what we could do to help him be ready for school. The first thing he needed was ‘looking eyes’, these eyes help him to look at the teacher when she is talking. Next he needed to put on his 'listening ears’, these helped him listen to what his teachers and friends were saying. We decided a 'quiet’ mouth would help him follow directions also. The final thing Potato Head needed was to have 'walking feet’ while indoors. Now he was ready form his day at school. We are having Potato Head get us ready for our days in the mornings as well. Thursday we began our day with Mr. Potato Head. We enjoy having him help us get ready for our day! We also got the chance to learn a few more fun songs for our Circle Time! These songs help us get settled in, and help us sit down the correct way. We also read another fun book, Never, Ever Shout in a Zoo, by Karma Wilson. This book was very entertaining to read. We each got the chance to guess what was going to happen next! Hola! Buenos Dias! On Friday we had Spanish with Senora Zoë. We enjoyed singing along, in Spanish, to some familiar songs like “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”, “The Wheels on the Bus”, and “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”. We were very excited when we noticed these songs were familiar. We also had the chance to introduce ourselves to Senora Zoë again. She would ask us our names and then we would sing a song with our name in it. We ended the He class by getting to choose between a rojo (red), or morado (purple) stamp. We had a great week! Have a wonderful weekend! Mrs. Pompa & Mrs. MickelOur photos are here. The Inquirers have had a very busy and exciting week! We welcomed our new, amazing teacher Mrs. Mickel to our class! We have enjoyed getting to know her this week and are very excited about our future with her.
On Monday we kicked our week off by introducing ourselves to our new teacher, and getting our routine established. Since we had a birthday this week we added some ribbon to Carter's birthday lantern! Our birthday friend, Carter, was out on Monday, so we celebrated his birthday as a class on Tuesday. We enjoyed celebrating with Carter's Mom, Dad and Grandma. Also on Tuesday we began to read the book, Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss. This book lead us onto our next activity. We each painted our own “apple”. We used green, red, and yellow to paint onto cut out egg cartons. On Wednesday, after our “apples” dried, we used them during our book time to stack them up on top. Each of us got the chance to stack some apples. We also took this activity further when we went outside. We used oversized dice and Lego pieces to stack. We each got to roll the dice, count number of dots we rolled and stack that amount up. On Thursday we not only continued to work with the book Ten Apples Up On Top, we had some fun Studio time with Mrs. Neese. We really enjoyed using paint and different stampers to make a beautiful art piece. This gave us the chance to use our fine motor skills, and gave us the freedom to pick from different stamps and place them anywhere on our canvas. Buenos Dias! We began Spanish on Friday! We got to meet our new Spanish teacher Senora Zoë. We are very excited about this new language! Senora Zoë passed around a pella, ball in English, and we each got to tell her our name. We sang along to a few songs, and practiced “Head, shoulders, knees and toes”. At the end of our class Senora Zoë read us a book about two friends who had no one else to play with at a park, and had to overcome a language barrier. The book was first read to us in English, and then in Spanish. We can't wait for next week! Mrs. Pompa and Mrs. Mickel Our photos from the week are here. The Inquirers had a fantastic week! We began our Monday by adding a new friend to our class, Turner. We have enjoyed getting to know him and helping him adjust to our class. This was a good opportunity for us to show him one of favorite things to do, take a walk through the Wetlands. We enjoyed showing off our beautiful trail to our new friend. On the last bit of our walk we got to see FOUR alligators! This was so exciting, since we haven’t seen any on our recent walks.
On Tuesday we decided to read one of our favorite books, Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons. We always love to read about Pete’s adventures. Afterward we decided it would be fun to make our own shirt with our very own groovy buttons. We began by sorting out different types of buttons. We sorted big, small, dark, light, shiny, and colorful buttons. We then got the chance to pick out our very own buttons. Since we only needed four, this gave us the chance to use our math skills by adding or subtracting buttons to equal four. We did amazing at this. We are all wonderful at counting out loud, but it becomes a little more difficult when u add objects into the mix. On Wednesday the rest of us got to finish up our shirts. We then glued on a picture of our face to make it our own. We really enjoyed this project, and will have to plan some more with Pete the Cat. On Thursday we had Studio time with Mrs. Neese. We went outside with her to paint in small groups. We began by putting on our aprons and picking out different colors of paint. We each had our own spot to paint on, on a clear, plastic canvas. When we decided we were done with our painting, we really weren’t done! We then put a piece of paper against our painting and rubbed it all over, this transferred a neat work of art to the paper. Then, we were done! These art pieces turned out really special, and got sent home. Enjoy. Friday was a bittersweet day for the Inquirers. It was Ms. Kelleher’s last day in our class. We have enjoyed our time with her, and will miss her very much. We got to meet our new teacher, Mrs. Mickel. We went on a walk to Port Royal Elementary, or the “Dinosaur Park”. We enjoyed having Mrs. Michel along. This gave us the chance to get to know a little about each other while having fun. We are very excited to have her in our class beginning on Monday. Have a great weekend! Here is the link to our photos from the week. The Inquirers had a wonderful week! We, as usual, started our week waking our bodies up with Ms. Brittney during yoga. We practiced such poses as the turtle pose, butterfly pose, and different stretches to increase and test our flexibility. We also had fun making thunder with our legs, singing and stretching to crabs in the moonlight and doing the yoga- poki! As the week progressed we read The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and made our own hungry caterpillars with popsicle sticks; they are bright and colorful to represent the various foods the caterpillar ate. We have been putting a great deal of emphasis on lower case letters - recognizing them in our names and in print. Our letter magnets and board games we have played helped greatly with this. We also have been practicing writing with our teachers on the dry erase board. This week was our last week with Coach Jack doing Wee fit, we will miss all of our interactive fun with him! Mrs. Neese came in for studio with us where we used our fine motor skills to play with play dough and see what we can make out of it all. Have a great weekend everyone! :)
