This week, the weather was absolutely beautiful. During our walks, we got to see butterflies, falling leaves, and even a bright red ladybug. We loved picking the green leaves and collecting the brown acorns. Our morning walks allow us to learn more about our environment each and every day. As the weather continues to change outside we will discover more and more about the world around us. We began discussing the color orange this week. We had so much fun with it, because there are so many orange things to explore this time of the year. Pumpkins are great to learn about during October. This week we mixed red paint and yellow paint to make orange. Then we used it to paint our own pumpkins. This was a wonderful new experience for us, because it was the first time we got to use paint brushes with the paint. Many of us who weren’t interested in touching the paint with our hands really enjoyed using the brushes. As an added bonus, while we were painting the pumpkins we also painted the paper underneath them. This gave birth to a whole new project for us to create. It’s very interesting to see how a planned project can branch off into a totally different direction. Earlier in the week, we made orange water by mixing red and yellow food coloring. We liked seeing how two colors combined to make another color, but that wasn’t the most exciting part of the project. We had the most fun when one of our friends spilled the water on the table. Then we got to clean up the mess, and we got to see the orange color bleed into the white paper towel. On Tuesday, Mrs. Bergmann brought in some flour, oil, and salt for us to make our own homemade play dough. We mixed it all up and added our food coloring to make our play dough orange. We had so much fun rolling, patting, poking, and pinching the dough. Playing with play dough is a good way to work on our fine motor skills which help us to one day hold a pencil and write. On Wednesday, Ms. Julie brought in some finger puppets to teach us some Sign Language related to Halloween. She had a ghost, a skeleton, a witch, and naturally a pumpkin. After teaching us the signs for each puppet, she also taught us the sign for Happy Halloween. On Thursday, Ms. Laura brought in some orange tape for us to decorate some pumpkin cut-outs this week. We like being able to feel the stickiness of the tape and being able to put it on the paper. We will continue exploring orange next week. It would be great if you could dress your child in orange on Friday. We are so excited about the upcoming week!! Please feel free to come and join us for the costume parade through the town of Port Royal on Wednesday morning at 9:15.

_This week has been a very busy one. We began the week by talking about the color yellow. Monday morning we went on a “yellow hunt” while we were on our walk. We found yellow flowers, yellow leaves, yellow butterflies, and yellow plants. We also found yellow signs, yellow trash cans, and a yellow school bus. We even found a yellow speed bump in the road. Later in the week, Colton’s brother, Jacob, brought in a yellow balloon to show us. I’d say our “yellow hunt” was a success. Next week, we will begin studying the color orange, which is very appropriate for this time of the year. We will work on this color for two weeks to carry us right into the end of the month. On Monday, we noticed that Mrs. Willis had planted new grass on our playground. It is soft and a little fuzzy. We all enjoyed touching and feeling it. It adds a new texture to our environment. In Yoga this week, Ms. Brittney reviewed a lot of the moves and songs that we love. We did the butterfly, the elephant song, and the dinosaur walk. We all love Yoga, and some of us are getting really good at the moves. On Tuesday, we had Studio time with Ms. Laura where we worked on our Service Project. We created a beautiful yellow sun to take to our firefighter friends. Also, on Tuesday we got to go visit the main building. The 3s class hatched butterflies, and we went over to see them. We even got to play on the porch while we were there. What fun it was to explore a new environment! On Wednesday, we had Sign Language with Ms. Julie. She brought in several pumpkins for us to look at and hold and she taught us the sign for pumpkin. On Thursday, we had Music. Mrs. Cooke taught us a song about pumpkins. Then we got to listen to the music while we played with the colorful parachute. On Friday, we got to visit the firefighters at the fire station. We really enjoyed learning about what they do for our community, and we loved getting to see the big, red fire truck. Thank you so much to all of the parents who joined us. Have a great weekend!! We look forward to what next week has in store! This week we had lots of fun with the color purple. We made purple butterflies with Ms. Laura and we played with purple play dough. On Friday, we wrapped up our study of purple by eating purple popsicles. Speaking of colors, this week in sign language we learned three new colors. Ms. Julie reviewed the colors we already know, and she taught us black, white, and brown. In the class we're still working on using our words to communicate. We're learning to ask for what we want. And we're learning to say all of our friends' names. Our vocabularies grow more and more each day. We also started talking about fire safety this week. We had so much fun trying on the fireman hats and jackets. Next week we will be talking about what we do if there is a fire. On Friday we will be going to the fire station to see the firemen and the big, red fire truck. Parents are welcome to join us if you want. Next week we will begin learning about the color yellow. If at all possible please dress your child in yellow next Friday. Thank you so much for all of your cooperation. Have a great weekend!! And we hope to see you all at the Family Day on Sunday. This week we had three special classes. On Monday, we had Yoga with Ms. Brittney. We did the downward dog, the slow moving elephant, and the dinosaur walk. On Wednesday, we had sign language with Ms. Julie. She reviewed colors with us. Then we played a color sorting game and incorporated the signs. On Thursday, Mrs. Kali Cooke returned from maternity leave to teach us music. She played her guitar as we sang about music and raindrops. Then she brought out the beanbags, which we got to put on our heads, toes, shoulders and even our noses! We had a great deal of fun with this activity. On Tuesday, we were outside playing when we began noticing the clouds, so we got a towel and laid it out on the ground. Once the towel was in place, we all laid on it and watched the puffy white clouds move swiftly, making a clear blue sky. Everyone enjoyed watching nature at work. This week we began discussing the color purple. We got a bottle of water and added red and blue food coloring. Once we added the food coloring, we all shook the bottle and made the water purple. Early in the week, Ms. Laura brought over some purple tape for us to stick to paper. Later in the week, we used purple finger paints to make beautiful pictures that we hung up in our classroom. On our walk this week, we looked at the purple flowers and purple dragonflies. This experience inspired us to create our own dragonflies. We used large coffee filters to make the wings; then we dropped red and blue food coloring on them. After they dried, we added the bodies to complete the dragonfly project. The children had tons of fun while doing this. Next week, we will continue exploring the color purple. We will also be working on our next community service project. The month of October is designated as Fire Safety Month, so we will be creating a picture for the local firefighters to hang in their station. Later this month, on Friday October 19th, we will be visiting the Fire Department to deliver the picture to them in person. We would love to have each of you to join us for this event. We’re certain that the children will enjoy the experience and hopefully, they will get to hear sirens, see lights and hear horns while we are there. As always, we thank you all so very much for your continued support. We hope that you have and fun, safe and enjoyable weekend! |
